Original Curve Sofa

Original Curve Sofa

  • Description
Around 1950, Vladimir Kagan set out to reimagine the modern sofa—merging the refined construction of traditional upholstery with a sleek, sculptural silhouette. Designed in response to how his clients lived, the form curved gracefully into the room, freeing wall space for large-scale art and inviting conversation. Though unnamed at the time, this early design became the foundation for Kagan’s iconic Serpentine and Freeform sofas—and now, in honor of the Serpentine’s 75th anniversary, it returns as the Original Curve Sofa. Crafted using the same time-honored techniques Kagan pioneered—solid wood frame, eight-way hand-tied springs, layered foam and distinctive ball casters—every element reflects his original vision, adapted for today. This is more than a reissue; it’s a celebration of a form that shaped modern design for generations to come.

Vladimir Kagan

Vladimir Kagan pioneered the enduring voice of midcentury modern design. A designer of not simply furniture but what he called “vessels to hold the human body,” Kagan joined the portfolio in 2016, personally entrusting his legacy to HOLLY HUNT. Kagan’s designs radiate his vitality and passion for discovery. Born in Worms, Germany in 1927, he emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 11, just before the dawn of WWII. From his father’s repeated admonishment “Ehre das Handwerk!” (“Honor the handcraft!”), Vladimir inherited an appreciation of artisan skill which, combined with his innovative design sensibility, was key to his success.
